From Broad Street Station: Walk 3 blocks south on Broad Street to Washington Street.

From Newark Penn Station: The light rail stops near the Library (see below). Make sure to validate your ticket before boarding the light rail. New Jersey Transit buses #72 and #76 from Newark Penn Station stop near the Library.

Light Rail: Traveling from Newark Penn Station: Board the Broad Street Station line of The Newark Light Rail. Get off at the Atlantic Street stop. Proceed left to Bridge Street. At the intersection, cross over Atlantic Street and continue up one block to Broad Street. Cross Broad Street to the northern end of Washington Park at Washington Street. The Library is across the street next to the Rutgers Business School.

Driving from the West or Garden State Parkway: Take the Garden State Parkway north or south to Exit 145, then follow signs to Route 280 East.

Route 280 East: Take right-hand fork of I–280 East, following signs toward Harrison. Use Exit 14 for Martin Luther King Boulevard. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right. Make a left at the next light onto Orange Street, then the first right onto University Avenue. Proceed south on University to the Newark Museum parking lot at the corner of Central and University Avenues. Make a left onto Central Avenue, then a left into the Newark Museum parking lot.

Driving from the East or NJ Turnpike: Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey Turnpike. Exit 15W to I–280 West. Proceed on 280 West to Exit 14B. Turn right at the end of the ramp onto State Street. Make a sharp right at the first light (under the bridge) onto University Avenue. Proceed south on University to the Newawrk Museum parking lot, at the corner of Central and University Avenues. Make a left onto Central Avenue, then a left into the Newark Museum parking lot.

Routes 24, 78 or Raymond Blvd.: Take downtown Newark exit for Route 21 North. Turn left onto Raymond Boulevard, then right onto Washington Street. Entrance of the Newark Museum parking lot is on the left immediately after the intersection with Central Avenue.

Routes 1 & 9: Follow signs for Route 21 (McCarter Highway). Turn left onto Raymond Boulevard, then right onto Washington Street. Entrance of parking lot is on the left immediately after the intersection with Central Avenue.

Parking on Washington St.: No parking 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Metered parking Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 25 cents for 20 minutes, one hour maximum.

Pay parking lots near the Library:

1. Newark Museum (Central Parking), 49 Washington St. (one-way north), near northwest corner of Central (two-way traffic) and Washington. Telephone 973-353-9561. This is the closest lot to the Library. Walk two blocks north (left) on Washington to Library.


2. Edison ParkFast, 42–50 Central Ave. (two-way traffic) at southeast corner of Central and Washington St. (one-way north). Enter between Central and Halsey St. (one-way south). Telephone 973-643-0895. Walk north (right) two blocks on Washington St. to northern tip of Washington Park, and cross street to Library.


3. Edison ParkFast, 14–20 Central Ave. (two-way traffic), mid-block between Halsey St. (one-way south) and Broad St. (two–way traffic), or enter at 28–36 Halsey St., mid-block between Central and New St. (one-way west). Telephone 973-465-2240. From the corner of Halsey and Central walk one block west to Washington St. and two blocks north (right) to the Library.


4. Edison Park & Lock, 10–20 West Park St. (two-way traffic), mid-block between Broad St. (two-way traffic) and Halsey St. (one-way south). Two blocks farther south of the Library than #3 above, listed despite its distance for those who prefer a park–and–lock facility. Enter also on New St. (one-way west) Telephone 973-643-9323. Walk about six blocks north to the northern end of Washington Park to reach the Library.
