The Newark Public Library's Statement Concerning Gift Books

We gratefully accept donations of books, but we do not necessarily agree to add all the books we accept to library collections. We add only those that fall within the Library’s collection development policy guidelines. We give others to the Friends of the Newark Public Library, who hold an annual book sale for the benefit of the Library.

We must decline to accept:

  • Books that are in poor physical condition:
    • Falling apart;
    • Bug-infested, soiled, badly marked, or yellowed; or
    • Moldy, damp, or emitting an unpleasant odor.
  • Almanacs, encyclopedias, and directories that are more than five years old.
  • Miscellaneous issues of magazines and journals.

We can accept "walk-in" donations of up to fifty books at the Main Library and at the branches.

We cannot accept donations of more than fifty books except by appointment. If you wish to donate more than fifty books to the Library, please call 973-733-7777 or 973-733-7842 to make necessary arrangements.

We can, if necessary, pick up significant collections of books that are of special interest or of exceptional value; but we cannot generally pick up donations of miscellaneous books.

While we always acknowledge receipt of book donations, we cannot appraise the value of books.
