The North End Branch Library is located at the corner of Summer and Grafton Avenues, two blocks east of Mt. Prospect Avenue or one block west of Broadway and approximately four blocks south of the Newark/Belleville border. Parking There is a small parking lot at the rear of the building, with five public spaces and one handicapped space. The entrance to the lot is on Summer Avenue, just south of the building. As the neighborhood is primarily residential, street parking is generally available. Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:00 – 4:00 are designated alternate side of the street, no parking days for street cleaning. You will be ticketed! Click here for a local map.
The branch is fully handicapped accessible, with an exterior ramp and elevator access to all levels of the building. Originally erected in 1930, to serve the growing population of Newark’s North Ward, the North End branch was closed for renovation in October of 1992. The collection was warehoused and the building renovated to include a parking lot, an addition to the rear of the building, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, including an exterior ramp and an elevator to all levels of the building, a community meeting room, and a story “pit” in the Children’s Room. Provisions were also made to allow for computer technology. The completed building was reopened on December 15, 1994.

Our community meeting room is regularly used by school and community groups. It has a capacity of 50 to 60 people seated at tables, or up to 100, seated auditorium style. The room may be used during regular hours and can be reserved by calling the Branch Manager at 973-733-7766. North End has attracted a large number of short-term volunteers in recent years, primarily students needing to complete service hours as a school requirement. The branch also serves as a clearinghouse for community information, especially for jobs and cultural activities. Patrons can avail themselves of our ongoing book sale and coupon exchange. |
