In 2002, the Newark Public Library partnered with a Latino community group called Friends of HRIC to create the New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center (NJHRIC). The NJHRIC addresses the informational needs of the state's diverse Hispanic communities, from the newly arrived monolingual immigrant to the English dominant researcher. It has three components:
The Latino Oral History Collection (of the Hispanic Reference Collection) – offers direct, first–person accounts of the lives and experiences of men and women from diverse Latino backgrounds who call New Jersey home.
• Puerto Rican Community Archives a collection of primary resources on the history and culture of New Jersey's Puerto Rican community. The Newark Public Library's New Jersey Hispanic Research & Information Center has received generous support from numerous funders, some of which include: the New Jersey Historical Commission, the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the Lucius and Eva Eastman Foundation and the Friends of the HRIC. Support the NJHRIC. The Friends of the HRIC is a community support and advocacy group established to help secure the ongoing development and operation of the NJHRIC. |
