FREE WIRELESS ACCESS @ THE NEWARK PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Library's high-speed Internet network gives you the freedom to use your Wi-Fi™ enabled laptop or wireless device almost anywhere in the Main Library at 5 Washington Street and at branch libraries.
Here are answers to some questions you may have about using wireless in the Library:
How can I use wireless at the Library?
Most users' computers instantly recognize the Library's networks at the Main Library and at branch locations. If your laptop doesn't already have wireless capacity, you can buy and install a wireless network interface card. The Victoria Technology Center on the third floor provides electrical outlets for your computer.
Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
You do not need a library card or password in order to access the wireless network. In many instances, wireless devices will automatically detect nearby wireless networks. Using your computer's network utilities, connect to the following networks:
Wireless network at the Main Library: tsunami
Wireless network at branch libraries: NPL-Branch-Guest
If your device does not connect right away, please try the following:
- Make sure your wireless network adapter has been properly installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Use the management software that came with your wireless device to confirm that your configuration settings match these:
NETWORK NAME or (SSID): any
NETWORK MODE: Infrastructure
IP or NETWORK SETTINGS: DHCP enabled or Obtain an IP address automatically
DNS: Obtain DNS address automatically
- Save any modified settings and restart your device as required.
Can the library staff help me to configure my computer?
Everyone's computer is different, so you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. If you have difficulty with the operations, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.
Is my information safe while using wireless?
Unless you are connecting to a web page that employs encryption (some stores, banks, etc.), your information is not protected. Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information. We recommend that you use up–to–date antivirus software, maintain a personal firewall, and turn off file and printer sharing.
Can I print while using wireless?
Printing is not available from the wireless network. If you need to print, please save your work to disk or flash drive, or email files to yourself, after which you may sign up for a library computer and send print jobs to a printer.
Since I'm using my own equipment, do the general rules about computer use still apply to me?
Yes, you are still subject to the Library's Policy Governing Use of the Library and Internet Use Policy. No one may disrupt services or disturb other patrons. The Library's network may not be used for illegal activities. Please note that the Library employs filtering software on the wireless network. Unfiltered access is available to adults in the Victoria Technology Center.
