Generating Soundex Codes in One Step

The Soundex system is a method by which surnames were indexed in the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 US Census. It is based on the way a last name sounds rather than the way it is spelled. The system was developed so that a surname could be located even though it may have been recorded under various spellings, like Smyth and Smith. Every soundex code consists of a letter and three numbers, such as W-252 and is used to search for census records.


Church Records:

Locating church records can be challenging. If a church is still in existence, records should be in the custody of that particular church. However, some records may have been published or microfilmed and may be available in a historical society or in a LDS (Latter-Day Saint) Family History Library. Original records of parishes that are no longer in existence may have been donated to a local historical society or to a specific denominational archive. Daughters of the American Revolution

Since 1890, this women's organization is "dedicated to keeping America strong by promoting patriotism, preserving U.S. history and supporting education programs." Women 18 years or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, are eligible for membership. Visitors can browse the online library catalog, read overviews about exhibits, request a DAR Patriot Index Lookup, and view virtual exhibitions.
