A Letter from Corky

Hi kids!

Well summer is finally here!

The weather is hot, the days are longer and it’s vacation time! I will miss my teachers and maybe the homework, but my school friends and I know we can meet at the library for their summer activities and to join the Summer Reading Challenge.

I know I’ll read a lot of books about animals, baseball, famous people, and mysteries, of course. I’ll be part of the library’s summer challenge to read at least 5 books and maybe I’ll read 100 books or even 200 books! Whatever I read I know my family will be proud of me.

My friends and I will have fun keeping cool at the library this summer. I hope you join us!

Corky’s Poem
By Kristen B.

Every night before Corky goes to sleep,
He gets trapped in a story real, real deep.
He reads about animals with paws, claws, scales, and tails.
While he reads, his imagination never fails.
He thinks about cats and their paws, and bears with their very big claws.
Even though big claws on the bears can give people a scare,
The tiny paws on cats are used to swat away gnats.
Corky’s favorite story is all about fish,
Their scales and tails can make you wish,
Wish you were that tiny, colorful, swimming fish.
He reads tales about dogs with tails that wag,
Tales about crocodiles with tails that drag.
There are tales about mice with tails too long,
And tales about birds as they sing their songs.
And after reading about animals all day long, Corky then goes to sleep,
Dreaming and imagining about the friends he will always keep.
READ ON!

Corky’s Crafts

Circly Snake

This project is rated VERY EASY to do.

What you need:

  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
and a good imagination!

How to make it:

  1. Tear out approximately 12 pieces of construction paper and cut them into 1-inch strips.
  2. When that is complete, start to put the construction strips into rings and glue them. As you glue, link one ring into another to form a chain.
  3. When all the glueing is complete get another piece of construction paper — draw a snake head, and cut it out.
  4. When that is complete glue the head on. Now you have your snake!

Corky’s Treats:

Ants on a Log

This healthy snack is one that kids can make by themselves. Simply spread some crunchy peanut butter and sweet raisins over celery for a smart snacking option.

Ingredients:

  • 5 stalks celery
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup raising

Cut the celery stalks in half. Spread with peanut butter. Sprinkle with raisins.

Raspberry Fizz

Exuberantly effervescent, this bubbly raspberry juice for kids gets its sparkle from raspberry sherbet and carbonated water. Mix it up a little and try cranberry-raspberry or apple-raspberry juice.

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups raspberry juice
  • 3 scoops raspberry sherbet
  • 1/2 cup carbonated water

In a blender, combine raspberry juice, raspberry sherbet and carbonated water. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.
