The three-time Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils and the City of Newark invite the residents of Newark to come, see and share in the New Jersey Devils/Newark Arena Model Tour. There will be six stops at various branch locations of the Newark Public Library. Each of Newark’s five wards is represented on the tour. The dates and locations are:
The arena model will be on view Mondays through Saturdays (except for holidays on November 8, November 11, and November 24, when the libraries are closed). In addition, on Wednesdays at each stop representatives from the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Newark and the Newark All Stars will be on hand from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to discuss their organizations.
The October 26 unveiling at the Newark Public Main Library was attended by students from the Greater Newark Academy (Ms. Grace Lobato's fifth and sixth graders), and the Burnett Street School (Mrs. Williams-Platt's and Mrs. Jones' fifth graders).
In addition to demonstrating the New Jersey Devils' support of the Newark community and its children through education, sport and the arts, the tour in the Newark Public Library branches will offer information for children 10-12 years old, grades 4-6, by having a hockey seminar entitled “Hockey Basics: What’s It All About.” The seminar will introduce children to hockey in an easy, fun and hands-on way by having a “Show and Tell” with hockey equipment and gear, and conclude with a “question and answer” segment.
New hocky books will be purchased for each of the Children's Rooms thanks to a generous donation from the New Jersey Devils to the library’s collection development fund.
The Newark Public Library is inviting all children in grades 1 through 8 who live or attend school in Newark to create their own hockey story, real or imagined. Using the theme “Newark, Hockey and Me,” the story should be 200 words or less, and can be a play, a poem, a story, or a diary. It may also be a story in pictures or photographs promoting the relationship among the New Jersey Devils, the City of Newark and the community. Children may participate according to their grade level: grades 1 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 and 8. Prizes will be awarded to the top winner in each grade category. All stories must be written by the child on the official “Hockey Story” booklet and submitted to any one of the Newark Public Library’s Children’s Rooms by Wednesday, December 14, 2005. Complete guidelines are available in each Children’s Room.
