Opening Reception for Weequahic Memoirs: Celebrating Newark's Legendary Neighborhood

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, July 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Centennial Hall, Main Library, 5 Washington Street, for the exhibition Weequahic Memoirs: Celebrating Newark's Legendary Neighborhood. A panel discussion entitled Weequahic Then and Now: Bridging the Years will be moderated by Sandra King, Emmy award-winning producer of NJN's Due Process and a graduate of Weequahic High school.

Panelists will include:

  • Judy Bennett — former Weequahic High School Alumni Association co-president and COO of Community Agencies Corporation of NJ
  • Paula Borenstein — Weequahic High School graduate; currently doing an oral history project on Holocaust survivors who settled in Newark
  • Warren Grover — local historian and author
  • Wilbur McNeil — president of the Weequahic Park Association and resident of the Weequahic community
  • Carl Sharif — former president, Newark Board of Education and long-time Weequahic resident

The reception is free and open to the public.

Funding for this project comes from an Operating Support Grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission. The exhibition is on loan from the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest.
