To celebrate September 2006 as National Library Card Sign-up Month, The Newark Public Library held a kick-off celebration on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 in the Main Library's lobby.

Library Director Wilma J. Grey welcomed the audience and discussed the benefits of getting a Newark Public Library card.

Special guest Mayor Cory Booker was a featured speaker at the event. In addition to getting his new library card, Mayor Booker also read a poem he had written about the importance of books, reading, and library membership.

The event was attended by members of the Friends of The Newark Public Library, the Municipal Council, and the Regional Business Partnership, as well as Newark Public Library patrons.
