Newark Library Unveils $1.3 Million Lobby Renovation

The $1.3 million renovation of The Newark Public Library’s grand
lobby will be officially unveiled during a dedication ceremony,
Wednesday, February 8, 11 a.m. at the downtown facility,
5 Washington Street. Funding for the project was provided by
The Prudential Foundation 125th Anniversary Fund and the New Jersey
State Library Public Library Construction Bond Program.
Expected to speak at the event are newly appointed Secretary of
State Nina Wells, Mayor Sharpe James, Library Director Wilma Grey,
New Jersey State Librarian Norma Blake and Mary Puryear of the
Prudential Foundation. The program will be followed by a tour of
the soaring Italian Renaissance lobby highlighting outstanding
features of the renovation that include restored marble floors,
cherry-stained custom millwork, fluted columns, crown molding and
the removal, stripping, repair and reinstallation of 108 original
windows.
The restoration of the main entrance and lobby is the first of
the Library’s planned three-pronged project of renewal, refurbishment
and enlargement to meet the technological and cultural challenges of
the 21st Century.
