The $1.3 million renovation of The Newark Public Library’s grand lobby will be officially unveiled during a dedication ceremony, Wednesday, February 8, 11 a.m. at the downtown facility, 5 Washington Street. Funding for the project was provided by The Prudential Foundation 125th Anniversary Fund and the New Jersey State Library Public Library Construction Bond Program.

Expected to speak at the event are newly appointed Secretary of State Nina Wells, Mayor Sharpe James, Library Director Wilma Grey, New Jersey State Librarian Norma Blake and Mary Puryear of the Prudential Foundation. The program will be followed by a tour of the soaring Italian Renaissance lobby highlighting outstanding features of the renovation that include restored marble floors, cherry-stained custom millwork, fluted columns, crown molding and the removal, stripping, repair and reinstallation of 108 original windows.

The restoration of the main entrance and lobby is the first of the Library’s planned three-pronged project of renewal, refurbishment and enlargement to meet the technological and cultural challenges of the 21st Century.
