During the recent memorial tribute to the late Charles F. Cummings, The Newark Public Library dedicated its New Jersey Information Center in Cummings’ honor. Cummings was the library’s Assistant Director for Special Collections and Statewide Outreach, and the Newark City Historian since 1988; he had been with the library for forty-two years.

Wilma J. Grey, Library Director, stated that the room would now be known as The Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center. Grey noted that the renaming was on behalf of the library’s Board of Trustees and the entire Newark Public Library “family.”

A number of friends and colleagues spoke at the tribute to Cummings, acknowledging his commitment to enrich and preserve the history of Newark and New Jersey through his roles as librarian, teacher, and City Historian. Also recognized were his weekly Star-Ledger column, entitled “Knowing Newark,” his work in establishing the Newark History Society, and his many other contributions to local history that left their mark on countless individuals. Additionally, the tribute noted Cummings’ establishment of The Robert Treat Endowment in the spring of 2005 to ensure that the collections housed in the New Jersey Information Center would be enhanced and preserved in perpetuity.
