Newark Public Library announces December programs

The Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street, announced its December schedule of "Saturday Programs @ the Branches" and two events at its Branch Brook branch library. The Newark Public Schools provided the funding for the popular "Saturday Programs" initiative, which are musical performances, plays and workshops thematically based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and are not only fun for the children, but are educational. All of these December events are free and open to the public. North End Branch, 722 Summer Avenue, 973-733-7683, December 9 at 11:00am. Winter Holiday Stories and Music with Richard Stillman and Gerald Fierst: Celebrate the holiday season with a multicultural journey through the world. Explore Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa through music and stories and folk instruments. Presented by Encore Performing Arts, Inc.

Vailsburg Branch, 75 Alexander Street, 973-733-7755, December 9 at 11:00am. Circus in a Suitcase: Join James Rana for an exciting one-man show that brings the circus to life through juggling, magic, colorful costumes and some wild balloon animals. Be a part of the circus!

Van Buren Branch, 140 Van Buren Street, 973-733-7750, December 9 at 11:00am. Happy Holidays Around the World with Beth and Scott: Celebrate the holiday season with Beth and Scott Bierko as they sing songs and tell stories of holiday traditions around the world. This joyous program is the perfect way to put a spark in the winter season and celebrate family, tradition, love and respect for all.

Weequahic Branch, 355 Osborne Terrace, 973-733-7752, December 9 at 11:00am. Dr. Electro's Science Party: Join Dr. Electro as he welcomes the audience to become a junior scientist. Help him perform experiments that will make products you can touch and feel.

First Avenue Branch, 282 First Avenue, 973-733-8091, December 16 at 11:00am. Gerald Fierst's Winter Holiday Tales: Celebrate the holiday season with storyteller, Gerald Fierst, as he creates an imaginative, exciting experience with lively characters and colorful words. He will tell multicultural stories about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the winter solstice. Presented by Encore Performing Arts, Inc.

The Branch Brook branch library, 235 Clifton Avenue, 973-733-6388, will hold an informal reception on December 6, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the branch’s opening in 1966. In addition, the branch will hold an arts and crafts program at 1:00pm on December 27 at which "jeanpillows" will be crafted. Each participant must bring an old pair of jeans and the Library will provide the rest of the materials.
