To help promote "hockey readiness" in Newark's youngsters, the Newark Public Library systemwide invited all children who live or go to school in Newark in grades 1 through 8 to create their own hockey story, real or imagined, with the theme "Newark, Hockey and Me." The hockey story was to promote the relationship among the New Jersey Devils, the City of Newark and the community. The hockey-story contest was held during the recent citywide tour of the model for the New Jersey Devils Newark arena.

"This essay contest is an excellent community relations program. It effectively promoted awareness about the Newark arena and educated our youngsters about hockey. I'm very impressed with the winning essays and congratulate all of the students who participated. This type of program proves learning can be fun," commented Mayor Sharpe James.

The three winners—Niruban Bahetharan, First Avenue School; Ty-Kwon Allen, 14th Avenue School, and Jesus Moran, Ridge Street School—will be honored in a February 2 ceremony with Mayor Sharpe James and New Jersey Devils executives. It will take place in the City Hall Rotunda, 920 Broad Street, at 4:00pm. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
