Newark’s young people in pre-K through 12th grades are invited to participate in the "Create Your Own Book" project sponsored by the Newark Public Library as part of its celebration of National Library Week. This year’s theme is "Join the Circle of Knowledge @ Your Library."

"Create Your Own Book is an annual tradition at the Newark Public Library and a great opportunity for our young readers to express themselves," said Wilma J. Grey, the library’s director.

Submissions must be original creations, hand-written, and presented in a special booklet available at the Main Library at 5 Washington Street and at all ten community branches. Children should choose their own topic or subject and may write about a true or imagined experience. The book can be a play, a poem, a story, a diary or a wordless story of pictures or photographs. Stories told in pictorials, comics or cartoon forms are acceptable.

Entries are divided by grade level: pre-K to 3, 4 to 8, and 9 to 12. Parents may help their preschool children by recording their children’s words.

Submissions are due April 30 and may be turned in at any Newark Public Library location.

"All the participants are winners. They are developing their literacy skills and exercising their creativity," Grey said.
