On Tuesday, June 26, 2007, The Newark Public Library held its annual kickoff to the Prudential Summer Reading Challenge.

Library region supervisor Paula Baratta explained all of the rules for this summer's challenge ( including the addition this year of a teen reading challenge) and then the festivities began. Jay Mankita performed The Day the Library Went Wild for the young readers, their family members, teachers, and camp counselors.

Attendees enjoyed refreshments, and received a visit from the children's mascot, Corky, who loves to use the hula hoop.

The Summer Reading Challenge will run from Monday, June 25 through Saturday, August 4, 2007.
