Library holds awards ceremony for Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge;
Library resumes fall/winter hours

The Newark Public Library has resumed its fall/winter-operating schedule. The main library hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays; 9:00am to 8:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Branch libraries hours are 9:30am to 5:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 1:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesdays; 9:30am to 1:30pm on Saturdays. 

On August 24, The Newark Public Library held a special awards ceremony, marking the end of another successful "Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge." This premier reading and literacy program encourages Newark’s children, in grades pre-K through 8, to include the adventure of reading in their summer fun activities. It rewards their efforts with popular events and a step system of prizes. Since its inception, participating children have read more than 100,000 books.

The theme for this year’s program was Corky’s Summer Splash . . . Ride the Reading Wave! Participants who read and reported on at least five books received prizes and achievement certificates. The top branch winners also received Staples’ gift certificates for school supplies. 

The following top winners at each branch library attained the 200-books-read level. First Avenue Branch: Kelvin Joel Coste, Wilson Coste, Albion Hoxha, Stacy Feliciano, Maria Maciel, Grecia Marte, Gabriela Mercado, Linette Ramirez, Karen Plaza, Xhusticja Hoxha, Nallerin Fernandez, Lissa Marte, Rebecca Marte, Jesus Olivares, and Ashley Egoavil. Main Library: Linchuan Zhang, Justin Harris, and Quami Collymore. North End Branch: Jared Lebron, Michelle Buestan, Jonathan Greck, Adrian Alcantara, Frank Naula, Rosia Oppenheimer, and Julianna Naula. Roseville Branch: Jonathan Bonet, and Michelle McClain. Weequahic Branch: D'Ondre Robinson, Latisha Robinson, and Daniela Bartley.
The following were the top branch winners who read and reported on fewer than 200 books. Branch Brook Branch: Kenyetta Lionel, Khadejah Lionel, Sasha Carrillo, and Tatiana Carrillo. Clinton Branch: Daniel Lyles. Madison Branch: Audrey Chioma Imo. Springfield Branch: Doran Bryant. Vailsburg Branch: Jarell Thomas. Van Buren Branch: Katherine Vicente.

Prizes (art sets) were also awarded to children who did the best job of coloring their Corky theme posters. The top winners were Jaida Hayes (first place, grade 2, Weequahic Branch), Lissa Marte (second place, grade 8, First Avenue Branch), and Luis Gabriel (third place, grade 3, Van Buren Branch).
