Press
Release April 11, 2001
The Newark Public Library’s salute to "Black America on Stage" will conclude with an April 26 presentation of Walk Together Children. The 6:30pm free performance will be held in the fourth-floor auditorium of the main library, 5 Washington Street. The “Black America on Stage” series was funded in part from a grant provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
Inez Kerr McClendon and friends will perform the presentation of Walk Together Children. It is an appeal to African Americans for “togetherness.” The performance consists of musical and dramatic vignettes that will recount some of the varied experiences of Black existence.
Ms. McClendon is a lifelong Newark resident. She is a recent retiree of the Newark public school system, where she served for 35 years as a music teacher. She is currently a voice and drama instructor at the Newark Community School of the Arts, as well as a music instructor and choral conductor for various organizations. She had also served as organist and choir director for several churches.
For more information about the program, patrons are invited to call the library’s Mary Teasley at (973) 733-7735.
