Library concludes health program series
Press Release 6/13/2000
The Newark Public Library will hold its final four health programs at three branch libraries on June 12, 14, 15 and 16. A
$500,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York enabled the library to present an ambitious schedule of
branch-based free public programs that began in the fall of 1999. The programs were known as CHIP: the community health
information project. These activities are part of "Branch 2000," a city-sponsored branch renovation project to enhance and
physically rehabilitate the ten-branch system.
On Monday, June 12, the Clinton branch will host a "Health Screening" program, from 10am until noon. Interfaith Health
Services, Inc. will provide free "screenings" of blood pressure, sugar diabetes, cholesterol, and weight. The branch library is
located at 739 Bergen Street; its phone number is (973) 733-7757.
The Rapping Firemen will present "Learning How to Stay Safe" at the Van Buren branch on Wednesday, June 14, beginning
1pm. The branch is located at 140 Van Buren Street; its phone number is 733-7750.
The Vailsburg branch hosts a repeat of the "Health Screening" program from 2pm to 4pm. The temporary location of the
Vailsburg branch, during its renovation project, is in the Boylan Street Recreation Center, 926 South Orange Avenue. The
phone number is 733-7755.
The CHIP health series concludes on June 16 at the Van Buren branch, when the "Newark trio" of Dr. Sampson Davis, Dr.
Rameck Hunt, and Dr. George Jenkins present a program entitled "Lessons on Becoming a Doctor." The branch is located at
140 Van Buren Street; its phone number is 733-7750.
For more information about these CHIP programs, patrons also may call Mrs. Mabel Spradley-Williams at 733-7735.
