Library organizes showing of "El Cuatro Gigante"
Press Release June 4, 2002

The Newark Public Library, in collaboration with the Division of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, is coordinating the one-day showing of the "El Cuatro Gigante" exhibit in the City of Newark. The exhibit consists of a mobile display of the world’s largest playable instrument (30’ L x 9’ H x 18’ W)—a Puerto Rican cuatro, which is a guitar-like instrument with ten strings arranged in five different pairs. The mobile exhibit will be on view on Thursday, June 13, in Washington Park, across from the main library, from 10am to 4pm. The creator of the instrument and members of his organization will be present to perform a demonstration, answer questions and distribute literature about the cuatro and its role in Puerto Rican society. A program, centering on playing the instrument, will take place from noon to 2pm. Refreshments will be served at the program.

CBS-TV2 is sponsoring the exhibit’s tour through several cities in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area to promote the values of Puerto Rican culture. The "El Cuatro Gigante" exhibit will be part of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City on Sunday, June 9, before it travels to Newark and other cities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

For more information about the June 13 program, patrons are invited to call The Newark Public Library at (973) 733-7772.
