Library holds awards ceremony  For Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge;
Library resumes fall/winter hours

The Newark Public Library held a special awards ceremony on August 25, marking the end of another successful "Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge." This premier reading and literacy program encourages Newark’s children, in grades pre-K through 8, to include the adventure of reading in their summer fun activities. It rewards their efforts with popular events and a step system of prizes. Since its inception, participating children have read more than 90,000 books.

The theme for the 2001 program was Be A Summer Survivor--Read! All participants who read and reported on at least five books received prizes and achievement certificates. The top branch winners and "over-all" winners also received gift certificates for school supplies. 

The top winners at each branch library were Nafisa Lionel (Branch Brook); Chioma Imo (Clinton); Xhusti Hoxha (First Avenue); Ifeoluwa Olayinka (Madison); Quami Collymore and Justin Harris (Main); Rachel Niemczyk, Justin Niemczyk, Adrian Alcantara, Diana Osorio, Aoi Uchima Jose Uchima, Jared Lebron, Patricia Morel, Michelle Buestan and Frank Naula (North End); Sadayah Manley (Roseville); Marcus Kelley (Springfield); Xavier Thomas (Vailsburg); Janine Delaney (Van Buren); and D’Ondre Robinson Latisha Robinson and Jolena Stewart (Weequahic). 

The "over-all" winners, those who read and reported on 200 books, were Xhusti Hoxha (First Avenue); Quami Collymore and Justin Harris (Main Library); Rachel Niemczyk, Justin Niemczyk, Adrian Alcantara, Diana Osorio, Aoi Uchima, Jose Uchima, Jared Lebron, Patricia Morel, Michelle Buestan and Frank Naula (North End); D’Ondre Robinson, Latisha Robinson and Jolena Stewart (Weequahic).

A "special mention" for high school readers went to Janine Delaney, Latasha Delaney, Ana Cristina Pena and Janice Delaney (Van Buren). 

Prizes were also awarded to children who did the best job of coloring their "Survivor" theme posters. The top winners were Diana Osorio (first place, grade 4, North End branch), Khadejah Lionel (second place, grade 2, Branch Brook branch, Bruce Kelley (third place, grade 8, Springfield branch). 

The library has resumed its fall/winter schedule. The main library hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays; 9:00am to 8:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Branch libraries hours are 9:30am to 5:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 1:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesdays; 9:30am to 1:30pm on Saturdays.
