Library is venue for "Ubuntu Video Club"
Press Release 4/12

The Newark Public Library has been selected as a new venue for an African cinema discussion group called the "Ubuntu Video Club." The clubs, in cooperation with the California Newsreel’s Library of African Cinema, incorporate African film in a larger process of deepening awareness of the cultural interconnectedness of Africa and its diaspora. At the same time, the project explores an innovative new approach to grassroots media literacy and film studies with implications beyond African cinema.

"Ubuntu" is a Southern African word that means "I exist because you exist." The Ubuntu Movement aims to facilitate communication and cultural exchanges, while emphasizing that African art is an integral part of world culture.

The Newark Public Library’s schedule, which will be presented by such facilitators as Kabu Okai-Davies, Marcia Heard, Vita Wa Ngongo, and Mansa K. Mussa, includes:

Rostov – Luanda, presented on May 6
Keita: Heritage of the Griot, presented on May 20
Pieces of Identity, presented on June 3
A Walk in the Night, presented on June 17

A group discussion follows each screening. The programs begin at 2pm in the fourth-floor auditorium of the main library, 5 Washington Street. For more information about this free program, the public is invited to call Mary Teasley at 733-7735.
