Branch Libraries continue Saturday programs for childrenAs part of the initiative that reopened The Newark Public Librarys branches on Saturdays, the branches continue to feature special childrens events and educational programs. Funding for Saturday programs was part of an initial $230,000 commitment from the Newark Public Schools. This support enabled the Library to purchase curriculum-related books and other instructional materials to help students meet elevated core curriculum requirements. The Newark Public Schools has granted an additional $175,000 for 1999. (A $180,000 Prudential Foundation grant provided for the Saturday staffing and proper operation of these libraries through the end of 1998; a City appropriation is bugeted for 1999.) For more information about the programs, services and collections at the branch libraries, visit or call the number listed for each location: Branch Brook, 235 Clifton Ave., 733-6388; Clinton, 739 Bergen St., 733-7754; First Avenue, 282 First Ave., 733-8091; Madison, 791 Clinton Ave., 733-8090; North End, 722 Summer Ave., 733-7766; Roseville, 99 Fifth St., 733-7770; Springfield, 50 Hayes St., 733-7736; Vailsburg, 75 Alexander St., 733-7749; Van Buren, 140 Van Buren St., 733-3897; Weequahic, 355 Osborne Terrace, 733-7751. |
