What's all the Hub-Bub about? Jack Livingstone, State Librarian, addresses audience as Dr. Alex Boyd, Library Director, looks on. A ceremony held on February 24 marked the opening of The Newark Public Library “Hub,” which provides Internet access and technological support to nearby libraries. The Hub system was established as part of the statewide Libraries 2000 Plan, which strives to link all libraries electronically and provide them with necessary technology for the new millennium. The New Jersey State Library and the library community have joined with Bell Atlantic (which committed $3.5 million for networking equipment to public libraries in New Jersey) to achieve these goals. As a Hub library, The Newark Public Library is providing technical support to more than a dozen local libraries, as well as Internet access at no cost to them, saving them approximately $1 million each year.
