Summer Reading Challenge "connects" at Library

Once again, The Prudential Foundation has provided generous funding to sponsor the Library’s Summer Reading Challenge for Newark’s school children in grades pre-K through 8. This year’s theme is Connect@Library.Read!

More than 9,000 children, ages 3 to 14, have participated in this superb reading and literacy program during the last eight years. The Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge begins June 26 and runs through August 19.

Win prizes! Have fun!
 The Challenge rewards children through a step system of prizes. Each participant will receive a Connect@Library.Read! poster, bookmark, and reading log for signing up. Those who read and report on at least five books will also receive prizes and achievement certificates. The top readers will win personal audio equipment. Special prizes will also be awarded in each of the three divisions—pre-K through K, grades 1 through 3, and grades 4 through 8—to those who do the best job of coloring their program posters.

Special events!
The festive program kicks off officially at 10am on Wednesday, June 28, with a fun-filled rally in Washington Park. The event will feature a special gift, entertainment and a picnic lunch.

Children may sign up for this popular program at the Children’s Room in the Main Library or at any of the Branches.

 More Summer Fun!
In addition to the Prudential Foundation Summer Reading Challenge, movies, arts and crafts projects, computer activities and games will be held daily in all Children’s Rooms. Activities and times vary, so check with each location for its schedule.
