Library revives Lorraine Hansberry Lecture Series |
Hispanic Heritage celebrationThis years Hispanic Heritage Month celebration offers a variety of programscomedy, history, literature, music, theaterand a special traveling exhibition tracing the evolution of Latin baseball in the United States. Orlando Peruchin Cepeda, a 1999 inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, has been invited to speak at the Opening Reception on September 21. The exhibition is entitled Diamond of Hope and Glory: The Life and Times of Latin Americans in the Negro Leagues (Diamante de Esperanza y Gloria: La Historia de los Latinoamericanos en las Ligas Negras). It was curated by Todd Bolton, Negro League baseball historian, and Dr. Lawrence Hogan, professor of History at Union County College, with the Librarys Juan Enrique Cintrón. The exhibition is on view through December 31 in the Lobby and second-floor Gallery of the Main Library. Diamond of Hope and Glory displays information about a number of the great Latin American stars and the Negro League records that they hold. From the early barnstorming teams through the decades of Negro League baseball, this exhibition offers a glimpse of what the major leagues were missing all those years. A complementary section spotlights contemporary Latin baseball superstars. The complete list of programs may be found on pages 4 and 5. The Friends of The Newark Public Library; the New Jersey Council for the Humanities; the Center for Latino Arts & Culture at Rutgers University; the City of Newark, Department of Neighborhood & Recreational Services, Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs; and a Community Development Block Grant/HUD funded the celebration. Co-sponsors include the Mayors Committee on Hispanic Heritage Month; Amigos de la Cultura Latina/Ecuatoriana; the Center for Latino Arts & Culture at Rutgers University; and the City of Newark, Department of Neighborhood & Recreational Services, Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs.
