Library revives Lorraine Hansberry Lecture Series |
N.J. Center gets 3 grantsThe New Jersey Information Center recently received three grants totaling $156,000: two from the New Jersey Historical Commission (for $131,000 and $10,000), one from the New Jersey State Library (for $15,000). The $131,000 grant from the Historical Commission will support the hiring of key staff members, including the hiring of a librarian to supervise access and preservation activities. The grant also earmarks funds for project consultants, a feasibility study, and equipment purchases. The $10,000 NJHC grant sustains ongoing preservation of the Newark Evening News morgue collection. Four scrapbook collections, totaling sixty volumes, will receive much needed preservation, thanks to the $15,000 funding from the State Library: The Griffith Music Foundation Scrapbooks document the cultural history of Newark from the Great Depression to the late 1950s. The Sydney Norris Ogden Scrapbooks depict the politics of Newark in the 1890s. The Albert Lincoln Vreeland Scrapbooks offer a unique autobiographical memoir of Vreelands remarkable political life. The Henry Wellington Wack Scrapbooks show the 250th anniversary of the founding of Newark, celebrated in 1916. The successful completion of this project will assure the continued accessibility of New Jersey history for all researchers.
