Hispanic Heritage Celebration
This years celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month is one of the Librarys most aggressive endeavors. It began on Thursday, September 17, with the opening of the exhibition, Puerto Rico 1898-1998: A Century of Change and Uncertainty, and the celebration continues through December 3rd with a wide variety of free cultural programs. See pages 4 and 5 for the detailed schedule.
Puerto Rico 1898-1998 will be on display through November 15 in the Main Librarys second, third- and fourth-floor galleries. The exhibition comprises original prints, books, photographs, posters, and documents relating to the complex one-hundred-year relationship between Puerto Rico and the Santa Maria by Tufino, a gift of Joan and Robert Burns.
United States. It was curated by Alma Concepción, independent scholar and assistant director of People and Stories. The fourth-floor display features Casitas: Gardens of Reclamation, an exhibition of photographs by Ejlat Feuer depicting vernacular architecture and gardens of the barrios.
The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Center for Latino Arts and Culture, Rutgers University, and The Center for Puerto Rican Studies, Hunter College, CUNY. It was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
