Newark youngsters were treated to backpacks, school supplies, and an opportunity to sign up for a library card as the New Jersey Devils, Newark NOW and The Newark Public Library partnered to celebrate “Back-to-School” and National Library Card Signup Month earlier this week at the Main Library, 5 Washington Street.

Children from local organizations, including Apostle House, the YMCA, and Newark Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs took part in the program. The event also launched the Devils’ third annual essay contest, in which the hockey team encourages students to participate by writing 200 words or less on the theme, "Newark, Hockey & Me." Essay booklets are available at the Main Library, or any of the 10 community branches. Youngsters may enter based on their grade level, and prizes will be awarded to the winner in each category.

Michael Gilfillan, Vice Chairman of Devils Renaissance Development, LLC, and Newark Public Library Director Wilma Grey warmly welcomed the children and their families. They were joined by former Devils forward Rob Skrlac, who greeted the young people and signed autographs.

"September is a special time of year for our children. It is back-to-school, as well as National Library Card Signup Month," said Gilfillan. "It is essential that our students understand the value of a good education at an early age, and there is no better place to start off the school year than at The Newark Public Library."

"We are delighted to be partnering once again with the New Jersey Devils to promote National Library Card Signup Month, and we encourage parents and their children to utilize the many offerings of The Newark Public Library and its branches," said Grey.
