Newark Public Library announces programs for Frances E.W. Harper Literary Society; concludes summer hours

The Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street, has concluded its summer operating schedule. The current hours for the Main Library are 9:00am to 5:30pm on Monday, Friday and Saturday; 9:00am to 8:30pm on Tuesday through Thursday. Branch library hours are 9:30am to 5:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 1:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday; and 9:30am to 1:30pm on Saturday. For more information, visit

The Frances E.W. Harper Literary Society, which discusses books on the African Diaspora, has announced its schedule for the coming season. On Saturday, September 15, from noon to 1:00pm, it will hold a registration-information session in the Main Library’s first-floor James Brown African-American room. The Society’s program schedule for the remainder of calendar 2007 is as follows:

  • September 19: Remembering "Separate but Equal" and Brown vs. Board Education, a discussion of the film Ruby Bridges, 6:30 pm.
  • October 3, 2007: Science Fiction, in Memory of Octavia E. Butler, a discussion of her book, Fledgling, 6:30 pm.
  • November 7: A discussion of Not Easily Broken, a novel by T.D. Jakes, 6:30 pm.
  • December 5: A discussion of A Hand to Guide Me, a novel by Denzel Washington with Daniel Paisner, 6:30 pm.
