It’s back! The much anticipated, yet occasional event is back: The Eighth Super Cool Display of Shopping Bags is on view on the third-floor gallery of the Newark Public Library now through March 16, 2008.

This edition of the display is devoted to international designs. Many of the examples being shown were donated to the Library by local world travelers. The exhibit also features miniature and master-sized bags, books about shopping bags, and a collection of bags dating from the 1970s that were recently donated to the Library.

"As you can tell by the number of times we’ve featured shopping bags in our cases and on our walls, we love this exhibit; it’s so much fun," said Library Director Wilma J. Grey. "This is such a whimsical display. Everyone can relate to these artistic merchandising examples."

The display is curated by William J. Dane, long-time Supervisor of Special Collections at the Newark Public Library. The Library’s collection of shopping bags, has surpassed the 1,000 mark. Selections highlight Newark’s retail history with local department stores such as Hahne’s. Several bags from museums showcase reproductions of artists’ work.

"The public is very enthusiastic about this special collection," said Dane. "This is art in its most public sense; out on the street where everybody can see it."

The display is free and open to the public during library hours. For more information, please call 973-733-7745.
