New Electronic Resource

The Library has added an exciting electronic research tool: the Biography Resource Center. It is accessible at the Main Library and all branches via a link on the “Internet & Electronic Resources” page of the Library’s website. Instant access to biographical data aids students and researchers—and patrons just curious about the lives of famous people, past and present.

The Biography Resource Center offers hundreds of volumes of biographical information, listing more than 150,000 biographies, ranging from historic figures to contemporary personalities. More than 8,000 portraits illustrate the entries. A “Custom Search” enables users to explore by nationality, occupation, place of birth and more. The “Full Text Search” feature finds keywords and phrases.

Five kinds of information are provided:

  •  narrative biographies
  • thumbnail biographies
  • newspaper and magazine articles
  • lists of additional resources
  • links to websites

Biographical essay information comes from over 70 respected reference sources, including Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Black Biography, Dictionary of Hispanic Biography, Encyclopedia of World Biography, Notable Women Scientists, and World of Invention, as well as from more than 250 current periodical titles, which enhance coverage of contemporary subjects.

For more information about this new resource, call the Arts and Humanities Reference Center at (973) 733-7820.
