The Director's Journal

Dr. Alex Boyd and Mayor Sharpe James discuss education initiatives at press conference.
Time and again, public and private sectors unite to make a dream a reality. An admirable example of this cooperative spirit transpired when the Library received extremely generous funding from the Newark Public Schools and The Prudential Foundation. The resultant $500,000 education initiative has enabled us to reopen the branch libraries on Saturdays, making available the print and electronic resources to help Newark students meet new core curriculum standards that use library skills.

On behalf of The Newark Public Library, I would like to thank the Newark Public Schools and The Prudential Foundation for their generosity . . . providing an invaluable opportunity for all Newarkers, especially our children.

I also take this opportunity to extend a special welcome to a new member of the Library's Board of Trustees: Joseph Yeadon. Mr. Yeadon is a certified public accountant, with offices in Newark and East Orange.

To Mark A. Santangelo, departing Board Member, we express our appreciation for his devoted service to our Library. We thank him for his long-standing presence on the Board, and for all he has helped the Library accomplish.

At the February 25 Board meeting, the following officers were elected for the 1998 calendar year:

  • President: Harold Lucas
  • Vice-President: Hilda Rosario
  • Secretary: Trish Morris-Yamba
  • Treasurer: Albert Coutinho
