When Kenneth Gibson was elected mayor of Newark 50 years ago, he became the first African American mayor of a major Northeastern city. Holmes and Roper both worked in the Gibson administration. Their book is an oral history of Gibson’s mayoralty, and an assessment of his historical significance.
