The event will feature a candle lighting ceremony led by founder of the Friends of the James Brown African American Room and Newark Public Library Board of Trustees member Dr. Anasa Ma’at.

This year’s theme is KUUMBA: To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. In the spirit of creativity, Dr. Ma’at will lead a conversation with special guest visual artist Yvonne Onque about how to use our creative gifts to be of service to our community and to give us a sense of purpose.
