Please join the Newark Public Library, Newark History Society, and New Jersey Performing Arts Center on March 8 for an exciting co-sponsored program.
Organized by the Newark History Society, “Breaking Barriers: African American Businesswomen in Early 20th Century Newark,” will take place both in-person and via Zoom at 6:00pm. The speaker is George Robb, Professor of History, William Paterson University.
In the early 20th century, a growing number of African American women in Newark broke economic and cultural barriers by establishing and operating a wide range of businesses. These pioneering Black entrepreneurs had to overcome both sexist stereotypes that a woman’s place was in the home and racist policies that sought to limit African American employment to unskilled, low-wage jobs.
In person: we will meet at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street, in the spacious James Brown African American Room on the second floor. Masks are required. Free parking is available at Bears & Eagles Stadium parking garage/Essex County Lot, entrance on Bridge Street between Broad Street and McCarter Highway.
This is the first time in two years that the Newark History Society will meet in person, and our first time offering an in-person program with livestreaming via Zoom. We hope to make this the model for how we meet in the future.
