Clinton Branch - Newark Public Library

Clinton Branch

The Clinton Branch is permanently closed

About the Branch

The Clinton Branch Library is located on Bergen Street (between West Runyon and West Bigelow Street). The major streets in the area are Clinton Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue, both are one block away from the branch. The Library is one block past the new Belmont Runyon School of Visual and Performing Arts & Science and Technology.

The Clinton Branch Library opened its doors to the public on December 2, 1925. It was the fourth branch of The Newark Public Library to open. The Library serves the Clinton Hill section of the South Ward and Weequahic section. It is located in a predominately residential area, with many small businesses throughout the neighborhood. The area is continually changing, with many new homes and several new and renovated schools. There are several preschool centers, three elementary schools and one high school in our three-block radius.

The Clinton Branch Library, still in its original state, is a two-story facility. The exterior wood and brick architecture is a reminder of the old, well-constructed buildings in historical Newark. The interior is separated into two stories, with the adult department on the first floor, and the children’s room on the second. The adult section also houses the young adult collection. This arrangement has benefited the adults, young adults, and children.
