The Newark History Society’s next program, “Fighting on Two Fronts: Black GI’s in World War II and Ollie Stewart’s Reporting in the NJ Afro-American,” will take place at the Newark Public Library on Tuesday, May 23 at 6:00pm, both in-person in the Library’s James Brown African American Room (2nd floor rear) and lived-streamed.
Larry Greene, professor of history at Seton Hall University, will focus on Ollie Stewart of the Afro-American,one of the first Black war correspondents to enter the European and North African theater of operations during World War II. Stewart reported on the contributions and discrimination faced by African American troops, from southern basic training camps to the battlefields of North Africa and Europe. While on furlough from the front, Stewart described his experiences in public appearances in Newark before returning to Europe. The experience of significant contributions to the war effort by Black GIs in the face of massive racial discrimination fueled the post-World War II Civil Rights movement.
