Newark was an industrial and financial center, and a key transportation center, as well as home to a diverse mix of ethnic and racial groups. Newarkers joined the military, worked in defense plants, grew victory gardens, conserved food, and financed the war through the purchase of government bonds. Learn about the contributions of Newark’s African American and immigrant communities. Discover the war work of women, as volunteers and in factories, and how civic organizations such as schools, the Red Cross, the YMCA, and the Newark Public Library supported the troops.
