Philip Roth wrote in his mid-twenties the novella Goodbye, Columbus in a matter of weeks, and it continues still to inspire admiration and controversy. What does it now feel like to reread it so many years later, and in the wake of the avalanche of his many other writings?
Steven J. Zipperstein, Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History at Stanford University, is the author and editor of nine books including Pogrom: Kishinev and the Tilt of History (Liveright, 2018) and Rosenfeld’s Lives: Fame, Oblivion and the Furies of Writing (Yale, 2008). He is currently writing a biography of Roth for Yale’s Jewish Lives.
