As one of the oldest public libraries in the country and the largest municipal library in New Jersey, the Newark Public Library has a long history of serving all residents of the City of Newark, including new immigrants. We recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion and understand that strong societies only exist where there is also a system of mutual respect.

We are profoundly saddened by the President’s cruel and shameful decision to rescind DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program that was put into place to protect children. We do not believe the decision is reflective of our values or our tradition. We call on Congress to act now to protect those potentially affected and reassure them that they have a place in a country they already call home.

To all those affected by this decision, please know that the library is a safe and welcoming place.

-Jeffrey Trzeciak, Director of the Newark Public Library

RESOLUTION REGARDING THE NEWARK PUBLIC LIBRARY WHEREAS, the current national debate over immigration impacts a large number of legal and undocumented immigrants in Newark and;

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees recognizes and affirms Newark Public Library’s mission is to serve all residents of Newark, as well as those who work in or visit our city, without regard to their citizenship or immigration status and;

WHEREAS, the Honorable Mayor Ras J.
