In March 1968, the historic Medical School Agreements were reached among community members, city and state officials, and the federal government. This negotiation determined the conditions upon which the NJ College of Medicine and Dentistry (now the Rutgers School of Medicine and Dentistry) would be built in Newark in the Central Ward on urban renewal land.<\/p>\n

The Ad Hoc Committee for Newark\u2019s History<\/strong>\u00a0has organized this day-long symposium\u00a0to commemorate the 50^{th<\/sup> Anniversary of the Medical School Fight. The symposium will explore the origins of the Medical School controversy, the community resistance, the negotiations and agreements, and the implementation of the community demands within a broader historical context.<\/p>\n}

The symposium will offer insights on issues of community urban development, housing, employment, and healthcare, which remain pressing issues in Newark. Scholars and veterans of this struggle for economic justice, and political empowerment will participate in a dialogue on urban policy, resistance movements, and equitable economic development.<\/p>\n
