Black New Jersey: 1664 to the Present Day<\/em>\u00a0tells the rich and complex story of the African American community\u2019s remarkable accomplishments and the colossal obstacles they faced along the way.<\/p>\n

Drawing from rare archives, historian Graham Russell Gao Hodges brings to life the courageous black men and women who fought for their freedom and eventually built a sturdy and substantial middle class.<\/p>\n

Graham Russell Gao Hodges\u00a0is a professor of history\u00a0and Africana & Latin American\u00a0Studies at Colgate University.\u00a0Black New Jersey<\/em> is\u00a0his ninth book.<\/p>\n

Hodges will be at The Newark Public Library on Thursday, March 7 to discuss the book and sign copies. Books will be available for sale at the event.\u00a0Light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n
