She\u2019s Not a Boy<\/em> is the story of Tatenda Ngwaru, an asylum-seeking intersex woman who fled Zimbabwe with sixty dollars and the hope that she would finally find a place she belonged, as she struggles to make New York City home.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Filmmakers:
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/em>Yuhong Pang is a postdoc research scholar at Columbia Journalism School. Born and raised in China, she previously worked at China\u2019s state television channel CGTN and The Wall Street Journal. Her work has been published on The Wall Street Journal, NationSwell, The Diplomat and broadcasted on Beijing Television. She is a graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Robert Tokanel is an emerging platforms producer at WGBH. His work has been published on The New York Times Learning Network, Boston.com, and Mic. He has previously reported from Jordan, Turkey, and Zimbabwe, and he is currently producing an augmented reality experience in Charleston, SC, which seeks to contextualize and reimagine Confederate monuments. He is a graduate of Northeastern University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Tatenda Ngwaru:
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/em>Tatenda Ngwaru was raised as a boy in rural Zimbabwe, and spent her teens trying to understand her complicated gender identity in a highly restrictive society before finally discovering she was intersex, a person born with both male and female sex characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tatenda\u2019s decision to embrace her identity in a country where being queer is criminalized and stigmatized caused a rift in her family and eventually forced her to flee Zimbabwe after receiving community pressure and threats of violence. After moving to New York City, she discovered that many people in LGBTQ communities also do not understand her experiences or make enough space for intersex voices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Driven by a desire to educate others about the lives of intersex people, Tatenda Ngwaru became an intersex activist. You can learn more about her work here: https:\/\/www.tatendangwaru.com<\/span><\/p>\n
