The people of Ferguson have a story to tell – and one that the majority of those in the United States have not heard or fully understood. This story is even more urgent today.

The death of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014 sparked outrage and launched a movement. Unwarranted traffic stops, fines, and arrests of people of color are a regular experience for those who either grew up or still live in the area. But these truths are not unique to Ferguson. They are replicated across the country. Many know and many have experienced this fact about America: people of color have been and continue to be systematically targeted and criminalized.

Ferguson isn’t the only community where inequality and disenfranchisement is manifest, but it has become a symbol. “Ferguson is everywhere” became the rallying cry in the days, months and years since Michael’s death.

The stories and images captured in Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame are a testament not only to the systemic discrimination that the Ferguson protests laid bare, but also the power of transformative action taken to foster accountability, community, and justice.

The Moral Courage Project, a collaboration between students engaged with the University of Dayton’s Human Rights Center and PROOF: Media for Social Justice, is an attempt to spotlight and honor those who responded to the death of Michael Brown. This traveling exhibit tells their stories.

FergusonVoices.org was produced in collaboration with TOKY Branding and Design, a St. Louis-based firm. The site contains rich audio excerpts, striking photographic portraits, and a dynamic interactive navigation that elevates the testimonies and gives multi-dimensional life to these powerful stories.

“In my work entitled Newark Walks, I have distinguished such a concept which is centered on places and structures, which have a role in daily life, specific to the City of Newark, NJ. Whether the identity of such still exists in its physical state or has disintegrated, only to be retained by memory itself. Each tells a story, each has a significance for those who passed through it, remember it, or are endeared to it.” — Rocco Scary

St. Benedict’s College was established by Benedictine monks in 1868, to provide a Catholic education for the sons of working-class Irish and German families who had fled religious and political persecution. Over the years, St. Benedict’s has mirrored the ethnic composition of Newark, and has welcomed successive immigrants, including Italians, Eastern Europeans, Spaniards, Portuguese, Latin Americans, and Islanders from the Caribbean.

As African American families moved from the rural American South to Newark and the industrial North in the Great Migration in the 1920s and 30s, few enrolled their sons in St. Benedict’s. The exhibit tells the story of how the monks of the Newark Abbey saw the changes in Newark in the years following World War II, and how they interpreted their vow of stability by making a conscious choice to remain in Newark. By the late 1960s the monks and their African American neighbors created an intentional dialogue, which helped shape the school’s commitment to the community, and where today young men of all backgrounds and races graduate as St. Benedict’s men.

Brick and Martyr is a multi-media exhibition featuring works by Akintola Hanif, a photojournalist who founded HYCIDE magazine in 2011. HYCIDE is an independent publication which presents stories of survival and freedom without judgment and challenges the status quo while bearing witness to the feared, neglected, and misunderstood. The exhibition pays homage to the residents of Newark, reviewing how class and identity constructs fuel stereotypes about poverty and people of color. The works document life in Newark and encourage a culture of compassion. Brick and Martyr forms an archive that provides an alternate narrative on how we persevered, both creatively and courageously.

"LIBRARY2"

Historically, the role of photography in the Black experience has been explored by icons such as Gordon Parks, Jamel Shabazz, Deborah Willis, Carrie Mae Weems, and countless others. Today, visual archives, like family photo albums, are tools that enable us to share stories and ideas about American citizenship and Black culture. One day, people will want to know: What biases and injustice did we face? How did we live? How did we survive? How did we value one another?

The exhibition will be open during regular Library hours, Monday through Saturday, with free admission.

Discover how how lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, and queer people who have lived in Newark claimed space for themselves in the community, in the face of poverty, violence, illness, racism, and discrimination, in the exhibit At Home in Newark: Stories from the Queer Newark Oral History Project.

At Home in Newark features several interactive and multimedia elements. Video clips with historic footage from the elaborate balls held by the LGBTQ community, part party, part community gathering, part educational center, will be shown. In the 1990s, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, events like the Fireball were places where safe sex information was available.

Exhibit visitors will be able to listen to extended excerpts from the oral history interviews either with MP3 devices or smart phones. An interactive station will enable visitors to explore critical issues examined in the exhibit: how do you identify yourself, and where do you feel at home and safe in Newark. A large map has been compiled that shows the locations of bars and nightclubs such as Club Zanzibar and Murphy’s that became sanctuaries for members of Newark’s LGBTQ community, and visitors will be encouraged to identify any other places that may be missing from the map.

The exhibit was curated by students in Dr. Mary Rizzo’s American studies class “Place, Community, and Public Humanities” at Rutgers University-Newark, drawing content from the life history interviews that are included in the Queer Newark Oral History Project, begun in 2011. The exhibition panels and graphics were designed by students in Professor Chantal Fischzang’s graphic design class “Visual Means.”

In addition to the exhibit, Ferguson Voices is also a limited series podcast and a storytelling website.

The podcast consists of five episodes that provide depth and detail in the events, as told by the people who were there, with their experiences and their perspectives at the center. The podcast can be accessed through Soundcloud, iTunes, and other popular platforms.

The Newark Public Library‘s 2017 Latino Celebration will feature the exhibition Boricuas in the Garden: The Story of Puerto Ricans in New Jersey. Boricua, pronounced BÔ-ree-kwa, another term for Puerto Rican, comes from Borikén – the name the Taínos, the island’s pre-Columbian inhabitants gave their homeland. This exhibit explores the long history and dynamic presence of Puerto Ricans in New Jersey and illustrate how this vibrant community has become an integral part of the fabric of the Garden State, paving the way for other Latino groups.

The exhibit will trace the history of Puerto Ricans in the Garden State with archival materials, historic photographs, and other documents about individuals and the community organizations they established, many drawn from the Library’s holdings in the Puerto Rican Community Archives, part of the New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center. It will also feature a selection of extraordinary works from the Library’s Puerto Rican Fine Prints Collection. The Newark Public Library has been acquiring original prints, signed posters and special books by artists and writers from Puerto Rico for over forty years. Today, it has a collection of approximately 400 fine prints and signed posters by artists such as Lorenzo Homar, Rafael Tufiño, José Rosa, Roberto Moya, Antonio Martorell, Luis Cajiga, Myrna Báez, Nelson Sambolín, and others who made Puerto Rico one of the most important countries in graphic arts in the mid-20th century.
