Dr. William Peniston, Librarian and Archivist at the Newark Museum, and Nadine Sergejeff, Special Collections Librarian at the Newark Public Library, will speak about the history of collecting at these two institutions. Learn about how John Cotton Dana, the Museum\u2019s founder and the second director of the Library, used prints as a teaching tool and the reasons why he collected certain works of art, particularly Japanese prints, and how this tradition continues to this day. The program will also feature a talk by Rocco Scary, book artist, who is currently working on a project called \u201cNewark Memories.\u201d A sampling of prints will be on display.<\/p>\n

This program is part of the anniversary celebration of The Newark Public Library and The Newark Museum. The exhibit, Promoting Books and Objects: Empowering Newarkers, will be on view in the third floor gallery until\u00a0 August 31st, 2019.<\/p>\n

This event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available at the Bears\/Eagles Stadium parking garage, located on Bridge Street.\u00a0Light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n

Newark, the largest city in New Jersey, has a complex and rich history. Clips from three acclaimed, award-winning documentaries by filmmakers Marylou & Jerome Bongiorno \u2013 Revolution \u201967, The Rule, and Rust \u2013 will allow a look at the past, present, and future of Newark. Participants will be able to learn about and discuss the opportunities and challenges of urban environments by examining Newark as a microcosm.<\/p>\n

Revolution \u201967 explores the 1967 Newark Riots\/Rebellion, The Rule examines urban school reform using the model of St. Benedict\u2019s Prep, and Rust investigates solutions to inter-generational poverty including prisoner re-entry.<\/p>\n

The City of Newark “Love Your Block” Mini-Grants Program connects residents with city departments and community organizations to implement hyper-local neighborhood beautification and community-building projects.<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The overall goal of the Love Your Block program is to prevent or eliminate property blight and revitalize city neighborhoods one block at a time.\u00a0<\/strong>Residents from the South Ward are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to residents in the Upper Clinton Hill neighborhood. Applicants do not have to be a part of a nonprofit to apply.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
