Historically there have been significant legal, institutional, and cultural barriers to American women practicing law. Women only began breaching these barriers in the late 1800s, but by the early 20th century the first generation of women lawyers were already making their mark. This program documents the remarkable careers of Newark’s pioneering women lawyers, including Mary Philbrook, Elizabeth Blume Silverstein, Laura Mayo Wilson, and Jennie Precker.

Open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments. Free parking is available at M Parking, 55 University Avenue, a 7-minute walk from the Library; please mention that you are attending a library event.
