The Newark Public Library will present an opening reception on April 7 for Self Made, an exhibition of photos of Black women business owners in Newark, with a focus on entrepreneurs in the city’s West and South Wards. The show celebrates their beauty, creativity, and connection to community.

The Self Made photojournalism project (www.selfmadenewark.com), launched in August 2020, originally profiled nine Black women business owners in Newark who were documented just before the COVID-19 outbreak. These photos were taken by Tinnetta Bell. New images by photographer RaeAnn Walters, showcasing women with at-home businesses, were added to the library show.

The exhibition, which runs through September 17, is presented in the library’s first floor gallery and the James Brown African American Room Gallery on the second floor.

Free parking will be available from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the Essex County Parking Deck (formerly the Bears / Eagles Stadium deck) located at 20-54 Bridge Street in Newark.

Please note: Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, ID and the wearing of masks are required for this event.
