A thriving theater district existed in Newark during the early decades of the 20th Century, when Market Street and the Four Corners were lined with cafes and cabarets. Newark’s theaters and vaudeville houses served as a proving ground for Broadway-bound musicals and performers that included Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Mae West, the Marx Brothers, and Fred Astaire.
Our presenter is Michael Immerso, a Newark native, cultural historian, and activist. He is the author of several books, including Newark’s Little Italy: The Vanished First Ward.
Open to the public at no cost. Light refreshments. Free off-site parking at Essex County parking deck at 20-55 Bridge Street.
