The Newark Public Library received a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to digitize a portion of its historical materials which document the Great Migration and Latino Immigration experience into Newark, NJ. The project, which concluded on July 31, 2018, promoted learning and outreach to children throughout Newark.

The Library digitized collections from the Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center and the New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center. Many of these materials are available in our digital archive.
As part of this project, the Newark Public Library promoted family literacy initiatives. The Library produced and organized:

- a professional development day for educators
- traveling exhibits
- a free activity booklet to be distributed to students in grades 3-8. Schools and organizations, please email specialcollections@npl.org to arrange a pickup. While supplies last.
